David asks: Trying to find the best Eight passenger vehicle. Looking at Suburban. Do you have any recommendations on best way to buy one?
My reply: Best way – or best vehicle?
There are many options if you need an eight-passenger vehicle. My question for you is – do you need a truck-based SUV? Do you need rear-wheel/four-wheel-drive and Low range gearing; more than 5,000 lbs. of tow capacity? If you do, then you’ll be looking at vehicles like the Suburban and its GMC Sierra equivalent and Ford Expedition. Full-size/heavy-duty vans like the Transit, Nissan NV and Mercedes Sprinter I recently wrote about may also serve, though most lack 4WD.
If, on the other hand, you mainly need the eight-passenger capacity and don’t need the rear-drive/four-wheel-drive/low-range gearing, there are several full-size crossovers that offer eight-passenger seating. These include the new Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, which also both come standard with a fairly large V6 and 5,000 lb. max tow capacity.
The best way to shop for one of these is covered in my book, Don’t Get Taken for a Ride, which is free upon request. The gist is to do your research before you start shopping, shop when you aren’t in a hurry, get competitive offers – as opposed to making offers – and buy when it suits you!
